Durham, N.C. – A series of troubling incidents in North Carolina has led to serious charges against a 14-year-old. The youth is accused of murdering a 15-year-old, engaging in multiple vehicle break-ins, and inciting a high-stakes police chase, authorities reported.
The chain of events started on Jan. 11, when Durham police were called to the 4800 block of Danube Lane, where they discovered the body of Aryion Clendenning, who had been fatally shot. The teenager was later pronounced dead at the hospital, marking a grim beginning to the series of events.
Continuing the investigation, on Feb. 4, Durham investigators issued a petition for first-degree murder against the involved 14-year-old. This charge linked the young suspect directly to the shooting of Clendenning.
In a related spree, the same teenager was implicated in numerous vehicle break-ins across Durham. Police records indicate that the youth was involved in eight instances of felony break/enter a motor vehicle, six with theft, and additional crimes including financial transaction card theft, damage to personal property, and financial card fraud.
On Jan. 25, a confrontation escalated when the youth reportedly engaged in a high-speed chase with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in nearby Chapel Hill. During the chase, shots were fired at a trooper, leading to more severe charges including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
Chapel Hill police also detailed a long list of charges linked to the chase, encapsulating the gravity of the offenses involving the use of firearms. These included assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, possession of a stolen firearm, and several counts related to the illegal possession and discharge of a firearm.
Currently, the 14-year-old is being held in secure custody, with the judicial system weighting the next steps in processing the charges laid out against him.
The community has been deeply affected by these incidents, prompting local authorities to urge anyone with information to come forward. Durham police are actively seeking additional insights into these cases, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in resolving such critical issues.
