PHILADELPHIA, PA – A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot while filming a music video with two older teens, police said, highlighting a perilous mix of young ambition and firearm presence.
Authorities reported that Ethan Parker was shot once in a Saturday incident on East Pastorius Street, where the group was making a video with real firearms. Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace indicated the footage is pivotal to the investigation, as officers work to piece together the tragic events.
Police responded swiftly, transporting Parker to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.
“Preliminary findings suggest that while creating the video, firearms were on scene, one of which discharged, leading to the 12-year-old’s death,” Pace said at a press briefing.
Authorities have charged a 17-year-old with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and other offenses in connection with Parker’s death.
The neighborhood is in shock; residents expressed their dismay over the incident. Sarah Lewis, a local, remarked, “This isn’t something you expect during the day in our community. Kids should have safe spaces to explore creativity without this kind of risk.”
The investigation is leveraging evidence from the video footage, pending legal protocols. “We’re securing warrants to access devices used during the filming, which will be critical in understanding the sequence of events,” Pace shared.
Pace mentioned that the shooting took place in the presence of parents of one of the teens, raising questions about parental supervision and awareness of real guns involved in the video. “The crime scene included various weapons, both real and fake. The origins of the live firearm remain under scrutiny, and additional charges could arise as the investigation continues,” he explained.
Inspector Pace emphasized the need for community awareness and vigilance in preventing future tragedies, urging parents to monitor their children’s activities, especially where dangerous props, such as firearms, are involved.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover who owned the weapon and how it ended up in the hands of the teens, potentially leading to further legal consequences for adults involved in the situation.
