19-Year-Old Student Charged with Manslaughter in Hit-and-Run Deaths of Three Arizona Classmates

Tucson, Arizona — A 19-year-old student at the University of Arizona has been arraigned on three counts of manslaughter following a hit-and-run incident that claimed the lives of three fellow students. Louis John Artal appeared in court on Monday, facing serious charges stemming from an accident that occurred near the campus last month.

On the night of October 30, Artal allegedly drove under the influence and at a high speed when he struck a group of students walking in a marked crosswalk. The victims included 21-year-old Sophia Troetel and 22-year-old Josiah Santos, who were in a romantic relationship, as well as 21-year-old Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza, Troetel’s roommate. Troetel and Santos died instantly at the scene, while Castillo Mendoza succumbed to her injuries the following day.

During his initial hearing, Artal’s attorney acknowledged that his client was involved in the crash but contended that he panicked and fled the scene. According to court documents, Artal returned home afterward, where his father advised him to report to the police station. Approximately an hour after the incident, Artal complied and turned himself in.

After a week of legal proceedings, Artal was released on a $250,000 cash bond. Initially charged with second-degree murder, he now faces reduced manslaughter charges, which could lead to a significantly lighter sentence if he is convicted. Legal experts suggest that the shift in charges indicates a strategic decision by the defense to argue against the more severe allegations.

In the wake of this tragedy, memorial funds have been established to support victims’ families. Community members have rallied to contribute, reflecting the deep connections among students at the university and the profound impact of the incident.

As the case unfolds, Artal’s future hangs in the balance. The legal proceedings will continue to draw attention as many in the Tucson community seek answers and justice for the lives lost in this heartbreaking accident.
