2-year-old Las Vegas boy wets his pants so mom’s boyfriend punches him to death

LAS VEGAS, NV – A Las Vegas man was sentenced to life in prison for the violent murder of his former girlfriend’s toddler, with the possibility of parole after 22 years. Terrell Rhodes, 31, faced this sentence for the 2021 death of two-year-old Amari Nicholson.

On Tuesday, Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced Rhodes to 20 years to life for first-degree murder. Additionally, Rhodes received a separate consecutive sentence of 28 to 72 months for assaulting a police officer during his interrogation. The decision marked a setback for Rhodes’ defense team, as these sentences are to be served back-to-back.

Expressing discontent, Rhodes commented on the fairness of the judicial process during the sentencing. Judge Bluth, while acknowledging the difficulties Rhodes faced growing up, emphasized that the senseless act against the child could not be justified and underscored the brutality of the toddler’s murder.

Amari was reported missing on May 5, 2021. At the time, Rhodes appeared publicly, pleading for the child’s safe return. However, on May 11, he confessed to the crime.

Rhodes told authorities he hit the boy multiple times after becoming enraged due to a minor accident. Law enforcement details revealed that after the attack, Rhodes attempted CPR but failed to revive Amari, and he disposed of the body.

Rhodes initially faced multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault on police officers. Surveillance footage from his interrogation displayed a dramatic struggle: Rhodes, appearing emotional, suddenly attempted to grab a gun from an officer’s holster. The officers subdued him quickly, preventing further escalation.

Earlier this year, Rhodes accepted a plea deal, which led to his sentencing. During the court proceedings, emotional statements came from Amari’s grieving family members. His mother, Tayler Nicholson, expressed enduring pain, while his grandmother, Carrie Howard, shared the deep sorrow of losing her grandson so violently.

The courtroom became a space of shared grief and justice for Amari, whose life ended abruptly and tragically. The resolution of this case serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young children and the lasting impacts of violence on families.
