GREELEY, CO – A 23-year-old woman was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for the brutal murder of a man, whom she also set afire in his own home. Despite the gravity of her crimes, Stacy Rodriguez appeared to maintain a cheerful demeanor throughout her sentencing.
Prosecutors were quick to condemn Rodriguez’s demeanor during the trial. Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia criticized her behavior, pointing out that Rodriguez seemed to take the legal proceedings lightly. “She jokes. She laughs. The jury got to see her true character,” Pirraglia remarked, emphasizing that she posed a danger to society.
Despite the somber circumstances, the presiding judge, Vincente G. Vigil of the 19th Judicial District, appealed to Rodriguez to use her time in prison to become a better person. He encouraged her to positively influence other inmates while still affirming the necessity of the life sentence for the protection of society.
The victim, Christopher Dickerson, 35, was deemed blameless in the tragedy. Evidence presented during the trial showed he did nothing to provoke the brutal attack.
The events unfolded in October 2021 when Rodriguez, accompanied by Hosanna Varela, met Dickerson at a Greeley bar. The trio subsequently went to his home, where the situation turned violent. Rodriguez fatally stabbed Dickerson and set his home ablaze.
A jury found Rodriguez guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree arson, tampering with a deceased human body, and two counts of second-degree burglary. Varela, who played a lesser role, pleaded guilty to first-degree arson, tampering with a deceased human body, and being an accessory to the crime. She received a 32-year prison sentence earlier this year.
Judge Vigil expressed his bewilderment at the senselessness of the crime, highlighting the disturbing nature of the case. “It is a struggle for this court to understand how you can go from meeting a person to viciously stabbing them in the course of a few hours,” he stated, reflecting on the profound impact of the crime.
Rodriguez’s sentencing underscores the severe consequences of such heinous actions while also shining a light on the judicial system’s commitment to both justice and the hope for personal reform.
