HOUSTON, TX – A couple from Harris County is facing murder charges after their four-month-old daughter was found dead in a motel room, her body discovered inside a dresser drawer where police say she had been placed to sleep.
Destiny Campos, 21, and Jeremy Fancher, 38, were arrested separately Friday and Saturday, days after first responders were summoned to a Days Inn & Suites on Rancho Mission Drive in the Mission Bend neighborhood. Emergency crews arrived around 1 p.m. on May 26 to find the infant, Brookelynn Fancher, unresponsive inside a drawer in the family’s room. Paramedics attempted life-saving efforts, but the child could not be revived.
According to investigators, the couple reportedly put Brookelynn in the drawer, sometimes closing it fully and stuffing towels around the edges. Authorities stated this was done to keep the baby quiet as her cries disturbed Fancher, who allegedly complained the noises were “piercing.”
Housekeeping staff at the motel reported prior concerns about the child’s welfare. According to the criminal complaint, employees encountered Brookelynn unattended in the drawer during past visits, at times when Campos was unresponsive in the room and her other young child, an 18-month-old daughter, was left unsupervised. When confronted, investigators say Campos dismissed concerns and laughed off complaints from the staff.
On the day of Brookelynn’s death, Campos told authorities she had asked Fancher to watch the baby while she slept. Fancher admitted to finding the infant completely inside the drawer when he arrived and said he later placed her back in with a white hospital blanket. He claimed that before he went out to a nearby store, the drawer was slightly open but not wide enough to see the baby from the bedside.
Upon returning, Fancher said he discovered Brookelynn lying sideways and not breathing. He removed her from the drawer and performed CPR, but the baby did not recover.
As the investigation unfolded, Campos’s grandmother shared that Campos claimed to be expecting another girl in the months after Brookelynn’s death, reportedly making comments about “replacing the one I lost.” This detail was noted in the criminal complaint.
Both parents now face murder charges as the Harris County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez acknowledged the diligent efforts of his team to seek justice for the infant, describing the case as deeply disturbing.
The couple remains in custody as prosecutors review the details surrounding the circumstances of Brookelynn’s death and the potential for additional charges relating to the safety of the other child found in the room.
