RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Accused serial killer Rex Heuermann is set to make a court appearance on Tuesday, where he is expected to face charges in the death of a fourth woman. The remains of the woman were found in a marshy area near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, according to multiple sources.
Heuermann, 60, has already been charged with killing three women whose bodies were discovered wrapped in burlap in close proximity. Prosecutors have identified him as the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
The alleged serial killer has pleaded not guilty to killing Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello, all found dead in December 2010. Heuermann is currently being held without bail.
The suspect is an architect who investigators linked to the women, all of whom were sex workers, through DNA evidence. This evidence includes a sample taken from a pizza crust found in the trash outside his Manhattan office.
Heuermann is due back in court in Riverhead on Tuesday, where prosecutors are expected to announce a grand jury indictment charging him with a fourth murder, sources said. There are also six other victims in the Gilgo Beach case whose deaths remain unsolved.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, which is handling the prosecution of Heuermann, has not yet commented on the upcoming court appearance. The case continues to unfold as law enforcement officials work to bring justice for the victims and their families.
