SAN ANTONIO, TX – A husband and wife from San Antonio are facing charges of capital murder following the death of their 10-year-old adopted son, authorities said Thursday.
Jonathan Miranda, 34, and Christina Miranda, 32, were taken into custody after police discovered evidence suggesting prolonged abuse and neglect contributed to the child’s death. The boy, identified as Michael Miranda in court documents, was found unresponsive at a home on Cielo Ranch late in the evening of September 24, according to local law enforcement.
Officers responding to the emergency call arrived to find Michael already deceased. Emergency personnel reported that the child appeared extremely underweight for his age, with visible injuries across his body. Authorities say initial examinations revealed sustained malnutrition, evidence of starvation, and visible wounds in various stages of healing.
The medical examiner’s review later found further trauma, including a severely distended stomach, extensive bruising, open sores, and signs of internal injury. Investigators also noted a dislocated arm and lacerations to the lower intestine, underlining the severity of the alleged abuse.
Court affidavits allege that Michael had endured frequent beatings and neglect. Witnesses residing at the Miranda home described a pattern of daily mistreatment, including repeated beatings with wooden and rubber paddles, and punishments that forced the boy to stand with his arms raised for long periods.
Other children at the residence reportedly told detectives that Michael was picked up and thrown to the ground as punishment, and when he lost control of his bladder or bowels from these attacks, he would be left uncleaned for extended periods.
Police say Christina Miranda admitted to keeping Michael isolated in the family laundry room for several days because he was ill. However, further investigation indicated the room had been prepared as a space for confinement over a much longer period. Officers observed dried feces on the floor and pet pads, broken drywall, and other indications of ongoing violence.
According to investigators, surveillance footage captured on home devices corroborated the timeline and severity of the abuse. Authorities believe the mistreatment spanned at least a year, leading to the boy’s eventual death from injuries and neglect.
Both Jonathan and Christina Miranda were apprehended without incident Wednesday night. As the investigation continues, they remain in custody, held on charges of capital murder.
The case has left the community shaken, with officials underscoring the extensive cooperation between detectives and medical examiners that was required to assemble evidence against the suspects. Other children living in the household have been removed for their safety and are now in the care of protective services.
As of Thursday, no bond had been set for either suspect.
