Fort Worth, Texas — An Afghan national has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for planning a terrorist attack aimed at disrupting the 2024 U.S. Election Day. Abdullah Haji Zada, a lawful permanent resident with a green card, was convicted of conspiring with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to carry out a violent assault against the democratic process.
Authorities reported that Zada attempted to procure two AK-47-style rifles and approximately 500 rounds of ammunition, fully aware of their intended use in a mass-casualty event on Election Day. The investigation was spearheaded by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), who uncovered Zada’s plans through ongoing intelligence and counterterrorism initiatives.
Search warrants executed by HSI agents led to the seizure of critical evidence and ultimately to the thwarting of Zada’s conspiracy. This operation underscores the FBI and law enforcement’s vigilance against potential domestic threats. Recent assessments indicate that groups like ISIS are intent on exploiting significant events such as national elections to inspire or execute attacks within the United States.
Since ISIS’s territorial losses in Iraq and Syria, the organization has pivoted to leveraging sympathizers located abroad, aiming to orchestrate attacks using readily available weapons.
