Coppell, Texas — Four years after a devastating dog attack that left her with severe facial injuries, Jacqueline Durand is making remarkable progress on her road to recovery. The 26-year-old woman sustained more than 800 bites in December 2021 while tending to two dogs as part of her pet-sitting business. The injuries she incurred were life-altering, prompting extensive medical intervention and numerous surgeries.
Durand was only 22 at the time of the incident, which occurred when she was caring for a German Shepherd mix and a Pitbull mix. In her fight for survival, she lost both ears, her nose, and significant portions of her facial structure, including her upper lip and jaw muscles. Her condition was so grave that medical staff had to resuscitate her four times, and she was placed in a medically induced coma for a week.
In a recent social media update, Durand shared that she has undergone approximately 30 surgeries since the attack. The most recent operation involved taking a tendon from her leg to help reconstruct her lower lip. She desires to remain transparent about her journey, frequently posting updates and reflections about her progress.
“Every year has brought a lot of change for me — both good and challenging,” Durand stated. “This year, I’ve focused on celebrating my survival and being grateful for those around me.” In the past, she admitted that the anniversary of the attack often brought painful memories, but this year marked a shift in her mindset, allowing her to appreciate her resilience instead.
As she approaches the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, Durand expressed profound gratitude for the support she has received. “I wouldn’t be here without my medical team, my friends, my family, and even my late dogs,” she said. “They’ve all contributed to my strength.”
Supporters have rallied behind her on social media, providing encouragement and well-wishes throughout her recovery journey. Messages of hope pour in, with fans highlighting her courage and thanking her for sharing her story. One supporter commented, “You truly look so good! Can’t even imagine how it’ll look once healed! Hang in there, warrior. You can do hard things!”
Despite the ongoing challenges related to her injuries, Durand has committed to being an advocate for trauma survivors. She aims to inspire others going through difficult times by sharing her story, illustrating both struggle and progress. “It’s been a crazy four years, but I have so much to be thankful for,” she added.
Durand’s journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, community support, and healing. As she continues to navigate her recovery, she looks forward to what lies ahead and remains dedicated to advocating for others facing similar hardships.
