LAGOS, Nigeria — The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has enacted a lifetime flight ban on a passenger following a violent incident during a recent Ibom Air flight. The decision was made in response to disturbances caused by Ms. Comfort Emmanson on flight Q9 303, which was traveling from Uyo to Lagos on August 10.
In a statement issued the day after the event, AON expressed its full support for Ibom Air, praising the airline’s prompt and professional approach to handling what it described as one of the most egregious cases of unruly behavior this year. The incident reportedly began when Ms. Emmanson ignored requests from the crew to turn off her mobile phone before takeoff.
As the flight landed, the situation deteriorated into a serious altercation, with allegations that Ms. Emmanson physically assaulted crew members and attempted to wield a fire extinguisher as a weapon. AON emphasized that her actions endangered the safety of both flight crew and passengers, labeling the behavior as intolerable.
Consequently, Ms. Emmanson has been added to the AON’s ‘No Fly’ list, preventing her from flying with any airline under the association’s umbrella for the rest of her life. This measure highlights the growing concern over similar disturbances, as AON noted an uptick in incidents involving unruly passengers in the Nigerian aviation sector.
Recent high-profile cases have included confrontations involving prominent figures such as musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, drawing attention to the pressing need for improved security measures. AON pointed out that the incident on August 10 raised significant questions about the effectiveness of current security protocols administered by the Aviation Security (AVSEC).
In light of these concerns, the airline association urged the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to conduct a thorough review of security practices at airports nationwide. AON reiterated its commitment to zero tolerance for such behavior, calling on all passengers to adhere to appropriate channels for expressing grievances while maintaining safety standards.
The statement concluded with a firm reminder that disruptive actions will lead to severe consequences going forward. AON spokesperson Prof. Obiora Okonkwo underscored the organization’s dedication to safeguarding personnel, travelers, and equipment, and ensuring the highest safety standards in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of cooperative behavior among passengers and crew to maintain a safe flying environment.
