Hong Kong, China β A tragic incident at Hong Kong International Airport resulted in the deaths of two security personnel when a cargo plane skidded off the runway and collided with a patrol vehicle, plunging both into the sea on Monday morning. The accident unfolded shortly after the Turkish-operated Boeing 747 arrived from Dubai around 3:50 a.m. local time.
According to airport officials, the crash occurred after the aircraft began veering left and skidded approximately halfway down the runway. The crew of four on board did not report any injuries and were situated at an open door of the damaged plane when rescue teams arrived. The plane split into two sections upon impact, becoming partially submerged in the water.
Airport operations executive Steven Yiu indicated that the patrol vehicle was not on the runway during the incident. βThe patrol car was in the wrong place at the wrong time,β Yiu clarified, asserting that the aircraft was responsible for the collision. Initial reports suggest that the crew did not call for assistance prior to landing, a detail under investigation.
Rescue operations commenced swiftly, involving local fire services and emergency teams. Rescue official Yiu Men-Yeung stated that the two trapped security workers were located after approximately 40 minutes of searching. Sadly, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the plane’s deviation from the runway is currently under investigation. The aircraft was leased by Emirates, a long-haul carrier based in Dubai, from ACT Airlines, and the implications of this tragic event may reach further into operational protocols and safety measures at one of Asia’s busiest airports.
Authorities have begun assessing the crash’s circumstances while coordinating with aviation and safety experts to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The collision has raised questions about the safety protocols in place for both aircraft and ground vehicles in the vicinity of airport operations.
The incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing condolences for the victims’ families. As investigations continue, officials are expected to release more information regarding the incident and the ongoing safety evaluations at the airport.
