Amidst Tragedy and Loss, Arewa Consultative Forum Calls for Unity and Vigilance in the North

Kaduna, Nigeria — Elders from the northern region convened on Thursday under the auspices of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) to address the myriad challenges facing the area, including insecurity, environmental disasters, and the loss of key figures. Attendees expressed deep concern over the escalating crises afflicting both prominent leaders and ordinary citizens.

During the 78th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, ACF Chairman Chief Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN) paid tribute to several notable individuals whose passing has left a void in the North. Among those remembered were former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, and former ACF Chairman Chief Audu Ogbeh. Their contributions to the region and the country were recognized as invaluable.

Osuman noted that the challenges extend far beyond the deaths of prominent figures, highlighting that children and the elderly have also fallen victim to the impacts of floods, violence from armed groups, and other calamities. “The pain we experience is significant, with losses affecting both our leaders and the ordinary populace,” Osuman said. He called for reflection and collective prayers as the region grapples with these issues.

The chairman emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning against complacency. “Insecurity, criminal activity, and natural disasters have plunged families into despair,” he stated. He urged members to remain vigilant and united, countering the forces of misinformation and division.

Despite the grim circumstances, preparations for the forum’s upcoming 25th anniversary celebrations in October are well underway. Osuman reported that committees are diligently planning a significant event aimed at honoring the organization’s resilience.

Osuman also reiterated the ACF’s non-partisan stance, declaring that while members may have their individual political affiliations, the forum’s commitment lies with the people of the North and the unity of Nigeria. He announced plans to engage with other organizations that share similar objectives, including the Forum for National Restoration.

The agenda for the meeting included critical discussions on security, economic challenges, youth development, and the overall state of the nation. A communiqué reflecting their deliberations is expected to be issued afterward.

Osuman commended the dedication of the attendees, who braved difficult circumstances to participate in the meeting. He encouraged them to continue their service to the people of the North, emphasizing the importance of solidarity, truth, and lawful behavior during this tumultuous time.
