Animal Cruelty Arrest in Memphis Leads to Shelter Code Red Situation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man in Memphis is facing a felony animal cruelty charge after local authorities seized 106 birds and five dogs from his backyard on Monday. The animals, now under the care of Memphis Animal Services (MAS), have put the shelter in a “Code Red” situation due to the sudden influx of animals.

The Memphis Police Department reported that the intake stemmed from a noise complaint by a neighbor about the presence of multiple noisy roosters, chickens, and pigs near his duplex. MAS officers were called to the home on Bayliss Avenue and found several animals in inadequate and cramped conditions, with one dog tied to a chain suffering from injuries similar to those sustained in dog fighting.

MAS states that the shelter does not have the resources, staff, or space to provide for this sudden influx of animals. The shelter is urging the community to assist by adopting or fostering dogs and cats already in their care, as they are currently unable to offer the seized birds for adoption or foster care.

The homeowner, identified as 47-year-old Luis Vallellanes, is charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony charge. MAS anticipates a long, drawn-out court battle as a result of the intake of animals.
