GOODYEAR, AZ – A deadly family dispute has left a Goodyear neighborhood reeling, after police say two brothers are now facing charges in connection with the violent death of their father during a chaotic clash inside their home early Wednesday.
Dayvon Jones, 22, and his brother Antwan Jones Jr., 23, were taken into custody following the incident at a residence on South 159th Lane, where their father, 41-year-old Antwan Jones Sr., was found unresponsive. Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures, but the elder Jones was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Police were called to the home just before sunrise after a report of trouble at the property, not far from the intersection of Estrella Parkway and Lower Buckeye Parkway. When officers arrived around 6:30 a.m., they discovered Jones Sr. inside the house, not breathing. Both brothers were immediately detained as part of the investigation.
According to records, both Dayvon and Antwan Jr. are charged with aggravated assault, while Dayvon faces an additional charge of second-degree murder. Court documents indicate that the siblings allegedly beat and strangled their father during the confrontation.
Investigators learned that the brothers had placed a 911 call, claiming they acted in self-defense after their father allegedly attacked them. They told dispatchers that their father was the aggressor and insisted they used force to protect themselves.
Interviews with the brothers revealed that tensions had been simmering within the household. The previous evening, a dispute erupted when Antwan Jr. told his father he wanted to be left alone, escalating further the next morning while the brothers were playing video games in their shared bedroom. According to their accounts to detectives, their father confronted them, challenging them to fight or leave his home, and eventually struck Antwan Jr., giving him a bloody nose.
Dayvon said he responded by restraining his father in a chokehold for roughly 15 seconds, while Antwan Jr. admitted to repeatedly striking their father during the struggle. After a brief struggle, the brothers said Jones Sr. went limp and stopped responding. Fearing retaliation if their father revived, both brothers fled the house rather than immediately calling for help.
Family members told police that prior incidents of violence had occurred in the household, including a report that Jones Sr. once assaulted and strangled Antwan Jr. several years before. The defendants reportedly told officers that they had long felt threatened by their father’s outbursts and violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and have not publicly disclosed all details about what preceded the fatal altercation. Both brothers are being held in Maricopa County Jail on $500,000 bond each. Court proceedings are expected in the coming weeks as the legal process moves forward.
