FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — An Arizona father has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder of his 6-year-old son, who tragically starved to death in 2020. The sentencing of 28-year-old Anthony Martinez on Friday also included consecutive terms for additional charges of child abuse and kidnapping relating to his surviving child.
The yearlong legal proceedings culminated with a Coconino County judge considering both aggravating and mitigating factors before determining Martinez’s fate. The most shocking element of this case was the manner in which Martinez’s son, Deshaun Martinez, was found: emaciated and confined to a tiny closet used as a makeshift bedroom that he shared with his older brother.
The court records revealed that the children were subjected to this confined punishment for approximately 16 hours daily over a month, as a harsh discipline for stealing food at night. The heart-wrenching details of the case underscored a disturbing level of cruelty and neglect, as further evidenced by an autopsy which showed that Deshaun weighed only 18 pounds—significantly below the norm for a boy his age. The manner of death was officially recorded as homicide.
