Jackson, Papua New Guinea — A violent gang has struck again, this time raiding the Ex-Seminarians Club in East Boroko, just recently linked to a brutal assault near Jackson’s Airport. The attack unfolded around 7:30 p.m. on a recent evening, when a group of armed men descended upon the venue, wielding axes, knives, and a firearm.
Eyewitnesses reported that six to eight assailants stormed the club, swiftly robbing patrons of K600 from the bar. In the midst of the chaos, a security guard who attempted to intervene was critically injured, sustaining a severe neck wound from an axe. The attackers displayed considerable violence, even using bottles as weapons during the incident.
Attempts by nearby residents, including local staff members from the Post-Courier, to halt the assault were met with threats. Armed with a pistol, the gang told witnesses to back off, creating a tense and dangerous atmosphere. An expatriate patron was also victimized when he was struck in the face, resulting in significant swelling around his eye. His desperate call for help was met with threats of gun violence, heightening the urgency of the situation.
The gang escalated their crime spree by stealing two vehicles in quick succession. Following the club raid, they targeted a man at Manu Autoport, further adding to their haul by taking his car as well.
Authorities are on high alert, especially as one assailant has been identified as resembling Jack Larry Marai, a fugitive who escaped from Bomana Prison. This connection raises concerns about the gang’s increasing boldness and possible ties to more extensive criminal networks.
