Indianapolis, IN — A 19-year-old man was tragically shot and killed in what authorities now describe as a drug deal gone awry on the southeast side of Indianapolis earlier this year. The incident, which took place on January 26 near South Franklin Road and Interstate 74, resulted in the death of Julius Parker Jr., a college freshman and recent high school graduate.
Nearly 15 months following the deadly encounter, police have charged 19-year-old Samuel Fancher Jr. with two counts of murder and a count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. Online court records indicate that an arrest warrant for Fancher was issued this Monday.
According to investigators, Parker was found deceased inside a parked car when police responded to a report of a shooting about 7:45 p.m. that night. The young man, a graduate of Franklin Central High School and a freshman at Ball State University, had ambitions of becoming a psychiatrist. Loved ones remember him not only for his academic aspirations but also as a talented athlete and musician.
The affidavit filed in court presents a grim narrative of the events leading to Parker’s death. His girlfriend informed detectives that Parker was engaged in selling marijuana and had conducted a transaction shortly before meeting Fancher. She recounted that during the sale in the 3300 block of Spring Wind Lane, Fancher was in the back seat of the car and expressed dissatisfaction over a digital payment via Cash App. A struggle ensued when Fancher allegedly attempted to seize a bag containing the drugs, ultimately pulling out a gun and shooting Parker.
Further complicating the case, investigators pieced together a communication trail between Parker and Fancher which included texts discussing arrangements for the marijuana sale. They also found evidence of financial transactions on Cash App, showing Fancher attempting a $900 payment to an account linked to Parker’s phone.
In their pursuit of justice, detectives relied heavily on the girlfriend’s account which was pivotal in drawing the link to Fancher. She even sent an email to the authorities with photographs of the individual she believed responsible for her boyfriend’s death. Although initially uncertain, she later confirmed Fancher’s identity from a photo lineup.
