Arrests Made in Davangere District Protest Violence Case

Davangere, Karnataka – In response to the violence that erupted during a protest against the perceived ‘lock-up death’ incident in Channagiri, the Davangere district police have taken swift action. On Sunday, 25 individuals were arrested in connection with the rioting that took place at the Channagiri police station on Friday night.

Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth mobilized five teams to apprehend those responsible for vandalizing the police station, pelting stones, damaging police vehicles, and causing harm to police officers. Through the use of CCTV footage and cellphone videos capturing the vandalism, the police were able to identify the culprits and make the necessary arrests.

Following the violence on Friday night, six cases were registered by the Channagiri station police, resulting in 25 arrests across four of the cases. The suspects were brought before the court to face legal proceedings.

The unfortunate event began with the detainment of Adil for a gambling case at the Channagiri police station on Friday. Tragically, Adil collapsed and died shortly after being taken into custody, leading to allegations of a ‘lock-up death’ by members of the community. The protest outside the police station quickly escalated into violence, leaving 11 police personnel injured.

The incident drew criticism from the Opposition, highlighting concerns about the state of law and order in Karnataka. The Chief Minister acknowledged the lapses on the part of the police, resulting in the suspension of two officers involved in the case.

As a precautionary measure, additional police forces have been deployed in Channagiri to maintain peace and order. Superintendent Prashanth emphasized the monitoring of social media for any posts inciting violence, warning that individuals found spreading such content would face strict consequences.

In response to the outcry, Home Minister G. Parameshwara announced a probe into the alleged custodial death in Channagiri. The suspension of an Inspector and a Deputy Superintendent of Police was announced due to perceived negligence and lack of proper action by the police. Further actions will be determined based on the outcome of the inquiry.
