Kamloops, British Columbia — A man critically injured in a violent assault late last month has died, leading to a second-degree murder charge against a suspect. Jason Pinette, 39, succumbed to his injuries, marking a tragic outcome for the local community.
The attack occurred in the early hours of September 27, when police received a report of an injured individual on Notre Dame Drive. Responding officers discovered Pinette in severe condition and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital.
Following a thorough investigation involving several divisions of the Kamloops RCMP, including forensic experts and serious crime units, authorities apprehended the alleged assailant. Justin Hopkin-Jones, 33, was formally charged with second-degree murder on October 8 and is currently held in custody as the legal process unfolds.
Superintendent Jeff Pelley, leading the Kamloops RCMP Detachment, praised the swift response and collaboration among various investigative teams. “Our team worked diligently to gather evidence and follow leads during this investigation,” he noted. He also expressed condolences to Pinette’s family, emphasizing the impact of the tragedy on the community.
The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Kamloops Branch confirmed that Pinette was a client of Merit Place Shelter, located near the site of the attack. The organization expressed its sorrow over the loss, noting the deep connections formed within the shelter’s community. In a statement, they extended heartfelt condolences to all affected by this incident.
Despite the distressing incident, officials emphasized that the assault was an isolated event, and Merit Place Shelter remains a safe space for its clients. In light of the tragedy, the organization is offering additional support services to both staff and residents.
The CMHA Kamloops is collaborating with police in the ongoing investigation but is currently not available for interviews.
