AIKEN, S.C. – A tragic murder-suicide took place at a gas station in Augusta on Monday, leaving a husband and wife dead, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred when 55-year-old George Britt went to the Murphy Express gas station on Richland Avenue, where his wife, 43-year-old Tiffany Britt, was employed. An argument ensued, and despite the intervention of an off-duty deputy, the situation escalated, leading to the fatal shooting of Tiffany Britt.
George Britt then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene. Both victims have been scheduled for autopsies to determine further details about the tragedy.
The deputy who tried to intervene suffered minor injuries in the process. Due to the involvement of an officer, the State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to conduct an investigation into the incident, as confirmed by Aiken Public Safety Capt. Marty Sawyer.
Prior to the tragic event, a troubling post had appeared on George Britt’s Facebook page, expressing his deep love for his wife and his inability to imagine life without her. The post hinted at a darker underlying sentiment that foreshadowed the shocking events that followed.
In the wake of the tragedy, a member of the community spoke highly of Tiffany Britt and her kindness, remembering her for the compassion she showed to others, especially children. The woman mentioned how Tiffany had welcomed and cared for children as if they were her own.
