Berlin, Germany — Authorities announced the arrest of four teenagers following a brutal assault on Social Democratic Party (SDP) campaign workers in Berlin, signaling a disturbing wave of politically motivated violence. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, also led to the physical injury of police officers who intervened during the attack.
The suspects, described as teenagers from another state, purportedly traveled to Berlin to participate in a small far-right demonstration. According to the police, their encounter with the SDP campaigners appeared unplanned but quickly escalated when they physically and verbally assaulted them at a bus stop in the Lankwitz area of the Lichterfelde district.
Witnesses reported that the attackers employed severe physical force, including kicks delivered with heavy-duty boots, leaving two campaign workers severely injured. The melee continued unabated until police stepped in, at which point the assailants turned their aggression toward the officers.
During their attempt to quell the violence, two officers were seriously wounded; one received facial injuries from a glass shard while the other sustained a fractured hand. Both required hospital treatment, along with one of the campaign workers, although all were later discharged.
Berlin police are now processing charges against the four individuals for collective grievous bodily harm, with an emphasis on the severity of their actions against law enforcement.
Condemnation from the SPD was swift and broad, with SPD general secretary Matthias Miersch highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by right-wing extremism. He underscored the urgent need to address such violent ideologies that threaten societal peace.
The attack prompted vocal concern from local SPD leaders and fellow democrats, urging a resolute stance against the rise of such violent acts. The local SPD chapter, increasing their engagement on social media platforms like Instagram, drew attention to the severity of the assault, portraying it as a call to action for all democrats to guard against extremist forces.
Reinforcing this sentiment, SPD member Carolyn Macmillan, one of the victims, insisted on the importance of democratic unity and resilience in the face of such threats, emphasizing the non-negotiable presence of democrats in affected areas like East Lichterfelde.
Saturday’s events played out amid a larger political context, with numerous counterprotesters vastly overshadowing the far-right group’s march. Police reported approximately 2,000 individuals participated in various demonstrations opposing the far-right faction, which managed a mere 63 attendees. The significant turnout of counterdemonstrators occasionally forced the initial march to reroute, though it concluded without further incidents under police supervision.
This violent outbreak occurs as political campaigns intensify nationwide in anticipation of the upcoming early parliamentary elections scheduled for February.
