Dewey, Oklahoma — A teenager has received a life sentence after admitting to her role in the brutal killings of her grandparents, an act she reportedly orchestrated out of a desire for their deaths. Heidi Dutton, who was 17 at the time of the December 2022 murders, faced the court on Friday, where she was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 38 years before being eligible for parole.
Dutton, now 19, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and desecration of a corpse. The sentencing reflects the severity of the crime while also considering her age and level of culpability, according to Washington County District Attorney Will Drake. “This was a calculated and brutal crime,” Drake noted, emphasizing the need to balance justice with the circumstances of her youth.
Her accomplice, 22-year-old Lucas Anthony Walker, who is identified as a member of the Cherokee Nation, has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison. Evidence presented in court established that the couple killed Larry Dutton, 73, and Deborah Dutton, 67, just days before Christmas, shocking neighbors and family members who reported them missing.
Concerns arose when the couple’s absence prompted neighbors to contact law enforcement for a welfare check. On January 20, 2023, authorities discovered the bodies buried in a shallow grave in the couple’s backyard. Blood residue and cleaned-up evidence in the victims’ shared bedroom led investigators to suspect foul play.
According to court documents, Heidi Dutton took minimal accountability for the murders, attributing the actions primarily to Walker. He reportedly shot Deborah Dutton in the face and subsequently attacked Larry Dutton with a knife after his firearm malfunctioned. After the murders, the couple buried the remains in the backyard, minimizing their presence from the home.
A disturbing dynamic emerged from the case as authorities uncovered Dutton’s chilling motivations. She allegedly stated, “I wanted them dead,” suggesting a premeditated intent behind the horrifying acts. The couple was captured on surveillance footage transporting the victims’ bodies, outlining the calculated nature of their actions.
Family members described the elder Duttons as respected individuals within their community. Larry Dutton served honorably in the U.S. Air Force before his retirement, while Deborah Dutton had a history of service and culinary expertise, further deepening the tragedy of their violent end.
