Body of missing Green Beret found in North Carolina pond after he told wife he was leaving her for his girlfriend

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – A North Carolina woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband, a former Green Beret, and concealing his death. Shana Cloud, 50, faces charges of first-degree murder and concealment of a body following the discovery of her husband Clinton “Clint” Bonnell’s dismembered remains.

Bonnell, 50, a U.S. Army veteran and physician assistant student, was reported missing at the end of January when he failed to attend a class at Methodist University. Concerned for his well-being, both a friend and the school reached out to authorities for a welfare check.

When deputies responded to Bonnell’s residence, they were met by Cloud, who claimed she hadn’t seen her husband since the day before. Bonnell’s vehicle remained at the house, along with his school belongings, adding to the mystery of his disappearance.

A month later, the tragic discovery was made. On February 25, a caller reported finding part of a human body in a pond on Gainey Road, approximately three miles from the couple’s Fayetteville home. The grim scene was described as a torso without limbs, thrusting the investigation into high gear.

Forensic analysis confirmed the remains were Bonnell’s, leading to Cloud’s arrest on March 28, two months after his initial disappearance. While specifics of Cloud’s alleged role remain elusive, authorities conducted thorough searches of the couple’s home and other properties linked to Cloud, analyzing digital and physical evidence.

The investigation unfolded amid revelations of marital discord. Bonnell, just prior to his disappearance, had taken steps towards divorce, according to testimonies from a girlfriend who informed investigators of his plans. Bonnell had reportedly consulted a divorce attorney the morning before his vanishing, sharing his intentions with Cloud later that evening.

As detectives continue to probe the case, detailed timeline reconstruction through digital data and records aims to piece together the events leading up to Bonnell’s death. The findings, both from physical searches and digital excavations, could cement the case against Cloud as more details emerge in the following weeks.

Bonnell’s untimely death has left a community grappling with the loss of a dedicated student and military veteran, sparking questions about what may have led to such a tragic end.
