MIDDLETOWN, OH – In a tearful confession, Brittany Gosney, a 33-year-old mother, recounted the harrowing moments that led to the tragic death of her 6-year-old son, James Robert Hutchinson, as investigators pressed her for the truth. The heart-wrenching story unraveled under the probing questions of law enforcement.
While enduring persistent questioning, Gosney eventually broke down and confessed to the shocking act committed alongside her boyfriend, 46-year-old James Hamilton. She admitted they disposed of her son’s body by throwing it off a bridge into the Ohio River near Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Authorities working on the 2021 case were faced with a heartbreaking scene rooted in an alleged attempt to abandon her children. Gosney had driven her three children to Rush Run Wildlife Preserve in Preble County, determined to leave them behind. Under pressure from Hamilton, who, she claimed, expressed being “sick of kids,” she carried out the plan on a late February day.
As Gosney attempted to speed away in her van, young James clung to the vehicle, desperately trying to stay with his mother. In a tragic turn of events, he was fatally injured when Gosney accelerated, reportedly dragging and possibly running over him. When she turned back to check on him, the devastating reality set in—James was gone.
Following these events, Gosney faced the judiciary’s severe verdict, receiving a sentence of 21 years to life in prison for murder. Hamilton, implicated for his involvement in hiding the evidence, was sentenced to 15 to 19 years in prison.
The Middletown Division of Police had earlier declined to comment on whether James’s remains were ever recovered from the river. The devastating loss and the heinous manner in which it occurred left an indelible mark on the community and on all those involved in the investigation.
As the case closed, it left behind a litany of unanswered questions about the circumstances leading up to the catastrophic decision by two people entrusted with the care of young lives. The chilling details continue to resonate, serving as a reminder of the unfathomable choices made in moments of despair and pressure.
The narrative of James Robert Hutchinson is a stark example of the grievous consequences of reckless decisions, echoing far beyond the confines of Middletown, Ohio.
