DES MOINES, IA – An Iowa woman is mourning the loss of her mother after a violent confrontation last November, when her ex-boyfriend opened fire as her parents tried to help her leave an abusive relationship. The tragedy ended with Ruth Robison dead, her husband critically wounded, and their daughter, Jasmyn Robison, left to grapple with the aftermath.
The shooting happened November 1, 2024, as Jasmyn prepared to move out of the home she shared with Hamza Smajlovic. According to court records, Jasmyn had decided to end the relationship following a tumultuous nine-year period, with the final incident involving an alleged assault by Smajlovic.
Recognizing the need to support their daughter during a difficult separation, Tony and Ruth Robison arrived at Jasmyn’s home to assist with her move. Their attempt to help proved fatal when Smajlovic, armed with a 9-millimeter handgun, shot both parents, killing Ruth and leaving Tony critically injured.
Ruth Robison’s loss is deeply felt by her family, who described her as a selfless mother who acted without hesitation in the face of danger. During Smajlovic’s sentencing hearing on Friday, memories of Ruth’s courage and kindness were at the forefront as loved ones addressed the court.
Jasmyn Robison, speaking directly to the man responsible for her mother’s death, shared the pain of losing precious time with Ruth. “I will never get the time back with my mother,” Jasmyn told the court, expressing sorrow and anger over the senseless act that shattered her family.
Chayse Robison, Jasmyn’s sister, also spoke during the sentencing. She reflected on their mother’s legacy, stating that Ruth’s memory would persist with honor and strength, even as the defendant’s actions marked his own legacy with shame.
Court documents reveal that Smajlovic later confessed in detail, admitting to the shootings during legal proceedings. He pleaded guilty in October to murder and attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the killing.
Tony Robison, who survived the attack, continues to recover from his injuries. The incident also drew attention to the broader issues of domestic violence and the risks victims face when attempting to leave abusive partners, a reality that the Robison family is now painfully familiar with.
As the community responds to the tragedy, friends and neighbors have offered support to the Robisons, emphasizing Ruth’s reputation as a devoted mother willing to stand up for her children.
Smajlovic’s sentencing closes the legal chapter of the case, but for the Robison family, the impact of one violent act will be lifelong. Ruth Robison’s memory endures in the hearts of her loved ones, who continue to seek healing while honoring her strength and sacrifice.
