California mom drunk drives into canal then leaves the scene and abandons her 4-year-old daughter to drown in the car

HICKMAN, CA – A California mother has been charged with murder after allegedly leaving her 4-year-old daughter to drown in a partially submerged SUV following a DUI crash. Authorities discovered the mother, Juliette Acosta, 26, had left the scene and was later found taking a bath, while her daughter, Reagan Herrin, was still trapped inside the vehicle.

Originally charged with felony drunk driving, Acosta now faces multiple charges, including murder, vehicular manslaughter, and driving under the influence causing injury. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office upgraded the charges after an investigation revealed Acosta’s blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit at the time of the crash on March 8.

The criminal complaint alleges that Acosta’s actions were particularly egregious as she abandoned her child in a life-threatening situation without rendering aid. “These charges reflect not only the tragic loss of young Reagan but also the degree of negligence involved,” a spokesperson from the DA’s Office stated.

The case has resonated deeply within the local community. District Attorney Laugero acknowledged its impact, emphasizing the need for a thorough and evidence-based investigation to uphold justice. “Our commitment is to both the victim and the legal process, ensuring justice is pursued with integrity,” Laugero remarked.

An outpouring of support has emerged for the Herrin family, particularly for Reagan’s father, Gage Herrin. A friend initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family during this devastating time, noting the overwhelming support from the community.

The campaign expresses gratitude, with plans for any surplus funds to be channeled back into the community in Reagan’s memory to help prevent similar tragedies.

In a striking development in the case, Acosta was apprehended in San Francisco after evading arrest. She was transported back to Stanislaus County, where she remains in custody without bail. Law enforcement officials indicated that, if convicted on all counts, Acosta faces the potential of life imprisonment.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the enduring impact such tragedies have on communities and families alike. As the legal proceedings continue, the hope among many is for justice to be served for young Reagan.
