CHANDLER, AZ — A Chandler woman is once again facing a series of felony charges related to animal cruelty after dozens of dogs were seized from her home last fall. April McLaughlin has been accused of eight felony counts of animal cruelty and 16 misdemeanor counts related to animal abuse.
The charges are the result of a thorough investigation into McLaughlin and her animal rescue, Special Needs Animal Welfare League (SNAWL), which operated out of her home. The investigation culminated in a search warrant being served on McLaughlin’s residence, during which nearly five dozen dogs were taken into custody by Chandler police.
Prior to the warrant being served, authorities had been inundated with reports regarding the rescue. This led to McLaughlin’s arrest and subsequent release as the case was referred back to the Chandler Police Department for further investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
In light of this situation, the city of Chandler is considering potential changes to city codes pertaining to animal cruelty. The case has prompted a reevaluation of existing regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The reemergence of animal cruelty charges against April McLaughlin comes after a previous incident wherein a large number of dogs were removed from her care. The ensuing legal proceedings highlight the ongoing efforts to address and prevent animal abuse in communities.
