ELK GROVE, Calif. — A routine day of work at a local Baskin Robbins/Togo’s turned violent on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to employees and one hospitalized, following a sudden and severe altercation initiated by a customer. The incident has raised concerns about rising customer aggression in retail settings.
Employees reported that the assault began when a female customer who had ordered a sandwich suddenly started yelling at one of the staff members. The situation quickly escalated as she chased him to the back of the store. It was there that she encountered another employee, Emily Ruiz, whom she attacked physically.
According to witnesses, the assailant struck Ruiz in the face, pushing her against a door forcefully. As Ruiz attempted to escape, she was hit again with a backpack. Shocked and hurt, Ruiz recounted her ordeal, noting that the attack left her disoriented and in pain. Subsequently, she was compelled to seek medical attention, where she was treated for shoulder and neck injuries, a scratch on her face, and received medication for a head contusion.
Security footage captured much of the event, which has been beneficial to the Elk Grove Police Department in their ongoing investigation. Efforts to identify and apprehend the assailant are underway, according to authorities.
Stephany Gallegos, a colleague who witnessed the entire episode, described the terror of the moment. She explained that Ruiz had tried to prevent the woman from entering a restricted area of the store, which led to the violent reaction.
The store manager, Michelle Narayan, hurried to the scene after being alerted by her team. Narayan, who has been with the establishment for three decades, expressed her shock, noting that they had never faced such grave circumstances before. She highlighted a recent uptick in customer aggressiveness but nothing that had previously escalated to physical violence.
The troubling incident prompted an operational review at the store, with Narayan revealing plans to enhance security measures, including the installation of additional locks and a panic button to better protect employees in the future.
In light of the attack, employees and management are calling for more stringent actions against aggressive customers to prevent such occurrences. They hope this incident will raise awareness and prompt better safety protocols in retail environments nationally.
The suspect remained at large as of Wednesday evening, and law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation. The community is left unsettled by the event, and there is a strong collective desire for justice and increased safety for all workers facing the public.
