NAGPUR, India — Tensions flared in Nagpur’s central Mahal district late Monday as what began as a protest near the RSS headquarters, escalated into a violent clash involving stone-pelting, arson, and attacks on police personnel. This unrest comes in the wake of demands for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, situated approximately 2 kilometers from the location of the clashes.
The disorders started after some groups reportedly burned effigies of Aurangzeb and a religious ‘chadar’ at Shivaji Putla Square, leading to large assemblies of aggrieved community members. The confrontations swiftly intensified, resulting in substantial injuries to law enforcement and emergency responders, and considerable damage to public property.
During these clashes, at least 10 members of the anti-riot commando force, two senior police officials, and two firefighters sustained serious injuries. One police constable remains in critical condition in a government hospital. Moreover, rioters set fire to over 40 vehicles, including two earth movers, and vandalized several police vans.
Police response included a comprehensive combing operation that led to the arrest of at least 50 individuals involved in the rioting. This swift action occurred as the Union home ministry requested detailed reports on the incident, anticipating the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the city in the coming weeks.
This alarming event prompted immediate responses from both local and national leaders. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari called for calm, urging the public to disregard rumors and collaborate with the authorities to restore peace. On the scene, Guardian Minister Chandrashekar Bawankule made clear that the state would act decisively against the perpetrators, emphasizing that no one involved would escape the law.
Local MLA Pravin Datke raised concerns about external elements potentially exacerbating the situation, indicating that these elements were possibly mobilized to stir unrest. In response, directives have been issued to the police to rigorously investigate and identify those behind the violence.
The police chief of Nagpur, CP Ravinder Singal, announced the deployment of over 1,000 additional police personnel to the troubled areas of Central Nagpur. Parts of Mahal, Chitnis Park Chowk, and Bhaldarpura are now under severe surveillance with restrictive orders to prevent further gatherings and ensure public safety.
