DAYTON, Ohio — A dramatic car chase that ended in a tragic crash also led to the discovery of a homicide victim at the shooter’s residence, local authorities said Friday. The series of violent events unfolded Thursday afternoon in rural Darke County, resulting in two casualties, including the alleged assailant.
The incident began with a distressing 911 call from an individual claiming that his friend started shooting at him as he arrived at the residence. The situation dramatically escalated as the shooter pursued the caller in a vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase through local roads.
Both vehicles eventually met disastrous ends, crashing separately in fields. The man identified as the shooter was ejected from his car during the rollover and died at the scene. The initial caller, who was targeted in the shooting, was hospitalized after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities then conducted a search of the deceased shooter’s home, where they discovered the body of a woman. The Darke County Sheriff, Mark Whittaker, later revealed the victim to be 53-year-old Juanita Maloon, the wife of the shooter, 57-year-old Josiah “Joe” Maloon. According to Whittaker, evidence indicated that Joe Maloon had “brutally beaten and shot” his wife prior to the chase.
The violent outbreak, Whittaker explained, began when another individual arrived at the Maloons’ residence for a presumed financial transaction, only to be met with gunfire upon retrieving cash from Joe Maloon’s vehicle. It was this violent response that triggered the frantic 911 call and subsequent pursuit.
At the crash site of Joe Maloon, investigators found a handgun near his body. They believe it matches the firearm used in both the shooting of the third party and the fatal injury to Juanita Maloon, though further ballistic analysis is pending to confirm this linkage. Additionally, shell casings were recovered from the driveway of the Maloon home, aligning with the sheriff’s account of the initial confrontation.
Despite the violent chain of events and the subsequent investigations, officials have yet to determine a clear motive behind the initial act of violence and the murder of Juanita Maloon.
