HAMMOND, Ind. — A suspect was shot and killed by Chicago police on Thursday evening after a series of events that began with reports of an armed individual in Chicago’s Far South Side.
Authorities disclosed that officers responded to a call shortly before 6 p.m. in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue. Upon arrival, they spotted a suspect linked to an aggravated battery who was getting into a vehicle. The individual fled the scene, leading police on a pursuit that ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street in Hammond.
Witnesses reported that moments after officers reached the crash site, the suspect opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, resulting in the suspect being hit. He was transported to St. Catherine Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
As of now, authorities have not released the identity of the deceased suspect. Both officers involved in the altercation were unharmed, albeit taken to a local hospital for precautionary observation and were reported to be in good condition.
In addition to the officers, no other injuries were reported, and a firearm was recovered from the scene. The situation remains under investigation, with the Chicago Police Department’s Investigative Response Team collaborating with the Hammond Police Department.
Oversight of the incident will also include an examination by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. In light of the event, the involved officers are to be reassigned to administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days, as is standard procedure following such incidents.
