Cincinnati Police Arrest Sixth Suspect in Downtown Brawl Amid Growing Concerns Over Safety and Racial Tensions

CINCINNATI — Authorities announced Friday that a sixth individual has been charged in connection with a violent altercation that erupted downtown late last month, further intensifying the response to the incident that left several people injured. The Cincinnati Police Department confirmed that six individuals are facing charges of felonious assault and aggravated rioting, expanding from an earlier report indicating that five were implicated.

As police work to apprehend the remaining suspects, four have already been taken into custody. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge noted that the department is actively pursuing the remaining two individuals involved in the incident that took place in the early hours of July 26.

During a press event attended by local leaders, Mayor Aftab Pureval addressed the violence that unfolded at Fourth and Elm streets. Approximately 100 individuals were involved, and six victims—five men and one woman—were subjected to what the chief described as “unimaginable physical violence.” The disturbing footage of the brawl quickly spread online, drawing national attention to Cincinnati.

The mayor, while on vacation at the time of the incident, discussed the racial dynamics depicted in the video. “The racial components of this incident cannot be overlooked,” Pureval stated, suggesting that some have exploited the situation to deepen divisions. Several leaders, including Pastor Damon Lynch and Council Member Scotty Johnson, echoed concerns regarding how national figures have addressed this issue, urging a more responsible approach to leadership.

As part of an ongoing investigation, the FBI is examining the brawl for possible civil rights violations. Chief Theetge indicated that alcohol was likely a significant factor leading to the violent confrontation, which seemed to escalate into a full-blown fight remarkably quickly.

Despite a police presence in the area, only one 911 call was reported from the scene, underscoring the chaotic nature of the brawl. “Had the Cincinnati Police Department been informed in real time, our officers would have responded with urgency and force,” Chief Theetge remarked.

Among those arrested, 37-year-old Dominique Kettle was charged following the incident, with earlier reports identifying Montianez Merriweather and Jermaine Matthews as key figures in orchestrating the violence. Video evidence allegedly shows Matthews delivering brutal blows to victims, including one who reportedly lost consciousness during the altercation. Additionally, 24-year-old DeKyra Vernon has also been charged in connection with the brawl.

In response to community safety concerns, Mayor Pureval acknowledged ongoing work to enhance security in downtown Cincinnati. He indicated that state support will bolster local efforts, with plans for additional bike patrols to monitor the Fountain Square District. Furthermore, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced that state troopers will focus on traffic enforcement, allowing city police to better address rising crime rates.

As the tumultuous situation continues to develop, city leaders are emphasizing a need for community cohesion and engagement in efforts to foster safety and address civic issues. Authorities encourage anyone with additional information about the brawl to reach out to Crime Stoppers, aiming to further their investigation and restore a sense of security in the downtown area.
