Climate Crisis Linked to Mysterious African Elephant Deaths: Study

Hwange, Zimbabwe: A recent report has shed light on the mysterious deaths of African elephants in Botswana and Zimbabwe in 2020, attributing the outbreaks to environmental conditions influenced by global warming and the climate crisis.

Initially, speculation surrounding the deaths included poaching and malicious poisoning as potential causes, but further investigation by scientists ruled out these factors. Other potential causes considered were environmental intoxication, infectious diseases, and increased habitat stress due to ongoing drought.

Dr. Chris Foggin, a veterinarian at Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust in Zimbabwe, highlighted the enigmatic nature of the deaths, noting that the animals died over a narrow window of time but not in close proximity to each other.

As resources such as food and water declined during the dry season, the elephants were forced to travel greater distances to find sustenance. Ultimately, it was determined that a bacterial infection, specifically caused by a little-known bacterium called Bisgaard taxon 45, led to the deaths of the elephants.

The study, published in the journal Nature Communications on Oct 25, revealed that the African elephant population is facing significant threats such as poaching and habitat destruction, with a decline in numbers from 2007 to 2014. The IUCN Red List projected continuous losses at 8% per year, indicating the urgency of addressing these threats to protect the species.
