New York, NY — The Harlem community is grappling with the loss of Excenia Mette, a 61-year-old grandmother and trailblazing entrepreneur, who was tragically killed by a stray bullet during a shootout late last week. Mette was checking on her grandson after hearing a commotion outside her home when she was struck in the head.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on April 22 near West 113th Street and Lenox Avenue. Law enforcement officials were prompt at the scene, and emergency medical services rushed Mette to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Another individual, 23-year-old Darious Smith, was also injured during the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to the foot. Police sources indicate that Smith, found with a firearm, was likely an intended target in the shootout. He has been charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, following a prior arrest related to a stabbing in 2024.
The search for justice persists as detectives continue to look for at least three other individuals linked to the violent outbreak, including the shooter responsible for Mette’s death.

Mette, widely known in her community as Momma Zee, became the first black female to own a bodega in New York City in 1987. Starting from humble beginnings by serving food outside her apartment to opening Momma Zee’s Food to Plez Deli at 2061 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., she made significant strides as a local businesswoman.
Her deli, established as a community favorite, fell on hard times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mette had set up a GoFundMe page during the pandemic’s peak in September 2020 to keep her business afloat, seeking assistance to cover rent, utilities, payroll, and other expenses. The campaign illustrated her relentless spirit and commitment to her business and the Harlem community.
The culinary spot, cherished by many for its homely ambiance and delightful cuisine, became a symbol of resilience and community solidarity.
Authorities have called upon the public to assist in the ongoing investigation by providing any pertinent information that might lead to the apprehension of the remaining suspects.
