Community Mourns as Funeral Plans Unfold for Fallen DeKalb Officer David Rose, a Hero Cut Short

ATLANTA — The community is coming together to pay tribute to DeKalb County police Officer David Rose, who tragically lost his life during a violent confrontation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) earlier this month. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church Atlanta, providing an opportunity for residents and law enforcement to honor his dedication and sacrifice.

Officer Rose was just 33 years old when he was fatally shot while responding to a report of an active shooter on August 8. His actions that day reflected his commitment to public safety and service. DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson remarked on the loss, stating, “Officer Rose dedicated his life to serving and protecting our community. We welcome all to join us on August 22 to honor his service and support his family and our law enforcement community.”

The officer’s family, which includes his pregnant wife and two young children, ages 6 and 1, is grappling with the heartbreaking impact of this loss. Rose’s service in law enforcement began shortly after he graduated from the police academy in March, following a decorated career as a U.S. Marine. He had received numerous accolades for his military contributions, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

The tragic events unfolded as Officer Rose responded to the scene just before 5 p.m. He was shot by Patrick Joseph White, the suspected shooter, who later turned the gun on himself. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted, prompting a lockdown at the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters.

Before joining the DeKalb police force in September, Rose worked as a jailer for the Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office. His commitment to community service was evident throughout his brief but impactful career and is remembered fondly by colleagues and community members.

A memorial set up in his honor has drawn significant attention, reflecting the community’s respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by law enforcement. The outpouring of support emphasizes the deep ties connecting officers to the neighborhoods they serve, highlighting the risks they face daily.

As the memorial service approaches, residents are encouraged to join in celebrating Officer Rose’s legacy, standing in solidarity with his family and law enforcement and reaffirming their commitment to honoring those who serve and protect.
