Philadelphia, PA — A West Philadelphia community is mourning the tragic loss of Souleymane Magassouba, a devoted father and respected colleague, who was fatally stabbed early last Friday morning at a local gas station.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the Exxon station on the 200 block of N. 63rd Street. Magassouba was quickly transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Colleagues and friends remember the 31-year-old parking attendant as a pillar of kindness and dedication. For over three years, Magassouba worked at a parking garage near Washington Square, where he was known for his friendly demeanor and commitment to his work.
Justin Sherlock, who worked alongside Magassouba, expressed his deep sorrow, noting how Magassouba’s presence is profoundly missed. “He was more than just a coworker. He was a great friend,” Sherlock said. “Thinking about him, knowing I won’t see him again, it’s just hard.”
Magassouba, originally from the Republic of Guinea, had made West Philadelphia his home in recent years. Known for his gentle nature, he was especially devoted to his young daughter. “He did everything with his daughter in mind. Everything was for her,” Sherlock added, highlighting Magassouba’s dedication as a father.
Inside the parking garage where Magassouba worked, a picture of him now hangs as a somber reminder to those who knew him. The community within the garage has been left shocked and saddened, with many residents and coworkers expressing their grief.
Paul Miles, the manager of the parking garage, recalled how Magassouba was always willing to help everyone. “Our community has lost a kind-hearted man who lifted the spirits of everyone around him,” said Miles.
Echoing this sentiment was Lindsie Rank, another acquaintance who parks her car at the garage for work. She remembered Magassouba as someone who could brighten even the worst days with his smile and positive attitude. “Those small moments did make big differences,” Rank noted.
The sadness felt by the community is palpable. Many of those who knew Magassouba personally have visited the parking garage to share their condolences, reminiscing about the impact he had on their lives.
The case took a turn on Saturday when Philadelphia police arrested 46-year-old Kareem Graves on charges of murder in connection with Magassouba’s death. However, the motives behind this violent act remain unclear, leaving a community searching for answers amidst their grief.
As investigations continue, the neighborhood stands together, honoring the memory of a man who was much more than just a victim of a senseless crime. Magassouba is remembered as a loving father, a caring friend, and a valued member of his community.
