BRONX, N.Y. — A distressing assault outside a Bronx mosque during one of the holiest months for Muslims, Ramadan, has shaken the local community and drawn attention to the safety of religious leaders. Omar Faruqe, a 22-year-old imam, was targeted by masked assailants as he was on his way to lead prayers at the Banglabazar Jame Masjid on Sunday night.
The attackers confronted Faruqe, questioning him and showing him a photograph to identify, which led to a rapid escalation when they attempted to force him into a vehicle. This violent incident unfolded quickly as other members of the mosque rushed to his defense, leading to a full-blown altercation.
Iqbal Hussain, the mosque’s treasurer, intervened, hoping to prevent the abduction of Faruqe. “My priority was to save this person. It’s our responsibility,” Hussain stated, reflecting on the chaos that resulted in his own physical injury—a bloodied nose.
As the altercation turned physical, punches were thrown and the attackers eventually retreated, driven away by the collective resistance of the mosque’s congregation. Despite the attackers’ attempt to flee in a vehicle, they were followed by a crowd, ensuring they did not take the imam with them.
In the aftermath of the attack, the local police have heightened their presence around the mosque’s vicinity, keeping a vigilant watch as the community continues its religious observances. The police are currently investigating the incident as an assault, yet no arrests have been made. The authorities have speculated that the attack may have been a case of mistaken identity, adding another layer of concern regarding random violence.
Imam Abul K Yahya, another spiritual leader at the mosque, remarked on the resilience of their community. “This is the house of Allah. Everyone comes here for prayer,” he said, underscoring the spiritual unity and determination to not be deterred by acts of violence.
Echoing Yahya’s sentiment, Faruqe expressed gratitude and confidence in the support of his community. “I feel safe all the time around these people right here. I know they’re my people, the Muslim community – I love them,” he said, highlighting the solidarity among the congregants.
