RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — The community came together Sunday evening to pay tribute to Lindsey Burger and her two children, Sydney and Colton, who lost their lives in a tragic murder-suicide last week. Neighbors organized a vigil outside the home where the incident occurred, reflecting a collective grief that has enveloped the neighborhood.
Messages of sorrow adorned luminaries placed along Mill Water Circle, capturing the intense emotions felt by residents. Trish Willcox, a neighbor, expressed the challenge of coping with such a loss, stating, “It’s hard to know what to do in these situations. It feels helpless and sad and depressing and lonely.”
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the three were victims of the heartbreaking incident. While official records name Lindsey as Burger, family friends noted she was known by her maiden name, Lindsey Peralta Vallerga. The devastation felt by the community was palpable, with many neighbors lamenting the loss of a mother and her two young children.
Blue ribbons dotted the streets, serving as a poignant symbol of childhood grief as neighborhood children mourn the loss of their friends. Willcox remarked on the impact of the tragedy on the younger residents, saying, “Our children are grieving right now because they played in the streets with these kids and they’re missing them.”
To help children express their feelings, sidewalk chalk was provided at the memorial, enabling them to leave messages and drawings that honored Sydney and Colton’s love for art. The memorial became a canvas for creativity as children decorated the space with Pokémon characters and heartfelt messages. Debra Payne, a local resident, emphasized the importance of emotional expression in the healing process, saying, “The kids need something to do. They need a way to express their grief, and I think this is healthy and healing.”
