Houston, Texas – Nearly two weeks have passed since Julian Comeaux, a Navy recruit, tragically lost his life after attempting to stop a car burglar. Those with him during the confrontation are now sharing details about the events that led to his death.
On the night of February 16, Comeaux and his friends were alerted to a break-in targeting one of their vehicles. They approached the scene on Hadley Street near Bagby around 1 a.m., hoping to intercept the culprit.
Kelvin Parish, one of the friends present, recounted confronting the burglar directly, only to have the suspect begin to walk away. The situation escalated when Comeaux pursued the suspect, resulting in a physical altercation.
Michael Fox, another friend, described the chaos of the scuffle: “We were just scuffling with the guy and then the next few seconds, gunshots rang out.” During the gunfire, one of the bullets struck Fitzroy Vanhorne in the arm, who described being in shock as adrenaline surged through him.
The violence proved fatal for Comeaux, who was hit by bullets in the arm and neck. Despite efforts to apprehend the shooter, who was described by police as a Black male with gold-tipped dreadlocks, the perpetrator remains unidentified.
Houston police continue their search for the suspect and have encouraged anyone with information to come forward. The lack of identification of the shooter has left Comeaux’s family and friends desperate for answers and justice.
Comeaux’s mother, Lerisha Sellers, expressed her grief and the desire for resolution at a vigil held recently. “I’m not whole, I’m still empty. I just want you to turn yourself in so we can have justice,” she stated, addressing the unknown assailant.
