Lawton, Oklahoma — Local residents have raised concerns after discovering numerous dead fish in Liberty Lake, leaving an unpleasant sight and odor along the water’s edge. City and wildlife officials, however, explain that this incident, though alarming at first glance, is part of a natural phenomenon, particularly in bodies of shallow water.
Officials from the city of Lawton have noted that dead fish typically surface annually due to fluctuating oxygen levels, but this year, the event occurred sooner than usual. Larry Parks, the Director of Lawton’s Parks and Recreation, mentioned that it’s a recurrent issue, often happening both in the early spring and late summer. “This year, the extreme heat accelerated the process,” Parks said.
Ryan Ryswyk of the Oklahoma Department of Conservation reiterated that fish perish in the summer months isn’t unusual. The main culprit, according to environmental experts, is the reduced levels of dissolved oxygen. Warmer water holds less oxygen than colder water, and as temperatures outside climb, the water heats up, making it increasingly difficult for fish to breathe.
Additionally, dying algae and other aquatic plants consuming oxygen can exacerbate the situation, further depleting oxygen levels which are vital for fish survival.
While it might be tempting for residents to intervene, city officials are handling the situation. Parks emphasized the ongoing efforts to manage the issue, “We have a team that clears the fish from the lake twice daily. We ask our citizens to avoid touching them and leave this task to us.”
Alongside these immediate measures, the city is also planning further improvements for Lake Liberty Park. These enhancements are slated to include erosion control and sidewalk repairs which are pending approval under the upcoming CIP 2040 plan. With these upgrades, the park is expected to offer a better experience for its users.
Parks encourages residents to keep communication open with city officials. “We appreciate the calls from the community. We are committed to improving this facility and are encouraged to see people enjoying it,” he stated.
