CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A tragic incident at a convenience store early Tuesday morning has left a 42-year-old woman dead and an 18-year-old male facing serious charges. The shooting occurred just after midnight at a Sheetz location on MacCorkle Avenue in Kanawha City.
Tiffany Adkins of Marmet was struck by a bullet as she approached the store. According to Lieutenant Tony Hazelett, Chief of Detectives with the Charleston Police, the shot came from a vehicle parked at a nearby gas pump. “As she walked from her vehicle to the entrance, she passed in front of the shooter’s vehicle,” Hazelett explained. “The gun discharged inside the car, went through the windshield, and hit her in the back of the head.”
The alleged shooter, Jacob Fields, told law enforcement that the weapon went off unintentionally while he was handling it. He was reportedly seen wiping the barrel of a handgun just prior to the incident, providing further insight into the circumstances. Authorities stated that Fields has been charged with wanton endangerment and involuntary manslaughter.
Witnesses, including others who accompanied both Adkins and Fields, remained at the scene to provide statements to police. Hazelett indicated that their accounts will be crucial as the investigation continues. He also confirmed that Fields was not illegally in possession of the firearm at the time of the incident.
The loss of life in such a tragic manner underscores the ongoing concerns about gun safety and the impact of firearms in everyday situations. Community members are left grappling with the implications of this event, as it shakes the sense of security in the neighborhood.
