Cork City, Ireland — A violent altercation in the heart of Cork City left a woman with injuries after a man assaulted her with a broken bottle. The incident, which occurred on the evening of October 23, 2023, highlights growing concerns about public safety in urban areas.
Robert Nachtygal, 39, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to cause bodily harm. The case was brought before Cork Circuit Criminal Court, where his sentencing is scheduled for October 30. Garda Kevin Roche charged Nachtygal following a thorough investigation into the attack.
According to Sergeant Dave Delea, the attack transpired on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. Witnesses reported that Nachtygal pinned the woman, aged 35, against a wall, repeatedly striking her in the face and head. The assault only ceased when a bystander intervened, potentially preventing further harm.
After briefly walking away from the scene, the victim returned only to find Nachtygal waiting for her. In an alarming escalation, he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to a nearby vehicle, where he subjected her to additional violence.
At that point, Nachtygal wielded the neck of a broken Smirnoff vodka bottle, raising it threateningly towards her face and neck in what appeared to be an attempt to inflict serious injury. The woman instinctively raised her right hand to shield herself, resulting in cuts to her wrist and palm as the glass grazed her skin.
The attack left the victim in distress, with a significant gash that bled heavily. The entire episode was captured on CCTV, providing crucial evidence for authorities.
Judge Helen Boyle presided over the initial hearing and has since remanded Nachtygal into custody while awaiting sentencing. The incident has drawn attention to issues of safety and public order, prompting discussions about the need for increased vigilance in city centers.
As Cork City grapples with the implications of this attack, community members are left reflecting on the importance of personal safety and the responsibilities of both law enforcement and residents in maintaining security in public spaces.
