DOLORES, Colorado – A single-engine plane that was reported overdue by family members has been discovered crashed in a remote area north of Dolores in Montezuma County. The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two people died in the crash, which was located by emergency personnel around 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The names of the deceased have not been released, and the bodies have not been positively identified. According to Sheriff Steven Nowlin, the bodies have been taken to the Montezuma County Coroner’s Office, and the cause of death is expected to be determined on Wednesday.
Investigators from the National Traffic Safety Board in Denver and the Federal Aviation Administration in Salt Lake City have arrived to examine the crash site. Sheriff Nowlin mentioned that the NTSB and FAA investigations will take time to determine the cause of the crash, whether it was due to mechanical issues or pilot error.
Because of the federal investigation, Nowlin stated that he cannot release details of the pair’s flight plan. However, the Sheriff’s Office had received a call late Saturday night from a family member reporting that their relatives, who were flying the plane, were overdue.
