FREEPORT, NY – The Nassau County SPCA has doubled the reward to $10,000 for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for the brutal stabbing of a dog found in Freeport with 17 stab wounds in November.
Nassau County SPCA Detective Matthew Roper emphasized the urgency of finding the perpetrator, stating that “time is of the essence” in seeking justice for the pitbull named Cornell. The dog is currently recovering at an undisclosed foster home.
Since holding a news conference on Dec. 28, the SPCA has received about a dozen tips, two of which are leading them in the right direction. However, no arrest has been made yet, and the investigation is ongoing.
Roper expressed concerns about the potential escalation of violence, stating that “this is a precursor to a more heinous crime.” He also highlighted the broader issue of animal abuse, linking it to patterns of violence seen in serial killers, school shootings, and mass killings.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly revealed that some of the wounds impacted the dog’s lungs, resulting in air leakage. She urged the public to come forward with any information, emphasizing that “no tip is too small” in aiding the investigation.
The SPCA hopes that this was an isolated incident as they continue their investigation, delving into possible broader patterns of abuse in the environment where the dog was living. The organization is committed to seeking justice for Cornell and ensuring the safety of other animals in the community.
