NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A 23-year-old man faces multiple charges following a violent altercation at Centennial Park on Thursday night. Justin Cunningham was arrested after an incident involving an attack on another individual near the Parthenon, a key landmark in the park.
Metro Nashville police responded to the scene after receiving reports of the attack. When officers arrived, they found Cunningham staggering away from the area and exhibiting signs of severe intoxication, including slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. Officers handcuffed him as they began their investigation.
The responding officers located the victim, who was found slumped over a pole with visible injuries. Blood was reportedly covering his face. The victim explained that Cunningham had approached him, demanding he play music from his phone. When the victim refused, Cunningham allegedly reacted with aggression.
According to the victim, Cunningham initially walked away but soon returned to launch an attack. He reportedly punched the victim multiple times, kicked him, and kneeled into his ribs. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s account, recalling cries for help and seeing Cunningham forcefully slam the victim’s head against the concrete.
As emergency medical personnel arrived to transport the victim to the hospital, Cunningham escalated his aggressive behavior, threatening the victim’s life and making claims of association with organized crime. He allegedly warned that he would “put a hit” on one of the officers present as well.
Despite attempts to resist, police successfully subdued Cunningham and transported him to booking. He now faces several charges, including aggravated assault, assaulting a police officer, public intoxication, and retaliation. A judge set his bond at $256,100.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the sometimes unpredictable nature of public gatherings and the potential for violence. Community leaders are calling for increased safety measures in popular parks to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
