Eden, North Carolina – A local dump truck driver faces multiple felony charges, including four counts of second-degree murder, after a tragic incident earlier this year claimed the lives of four utility workers. The driver, Michael Ray Vernon, 66, was indicted following a grand jury hearing, where evidence was presented regarding the fatal April 24 crash.
The indictment, unveiled on Tuesday, also includes charges of assault with a deadly weapon related to injuries sustained by three other workers during the crash. The deceased were identified as Douglas Garland Sides, 72, of Summerfield; Madison Carter, 32, of Sandy Ridge; William Evans, 35, from Randleman; and Matthew Lockwood, 30, of Winston-Salem. All four men died at the scene.
According to authorities, Vernon was unable to stop at a crucial intersection on Carroll Street, striking the crew as they worked on power lines. The collision also involved a bucket truck before Vernon’s vehicle careened into a nearby ditch. Two of the injured linemen sustained serious injuries, while the third suffered minor wounds.
The aftermath of the crash led to significant changes within the local public works department. One week later, the city of Eden announced the termination of Vernon and Elmer “Dusty” Curry, the Public Works Operations Superintendent. Meanwhile, Darren Gatewood, the Public Works Operations Manager, chose to retire.
Originally, Vernon faced lesser charges, including a violation linked to a stop sign and several counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle. However, those initial charges were dropped in light of the more serious indictments issued this week.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, emphasizing the need for increased safety precautions for utility workers operating in high-traffic areas.
