Early Morning Crash Claims Lives of Three Kankakee Residents in Riverview Neighborhood

Kankakee, Illinois – A tragic accident early Sunday in the historical Kankakee Riverview neighborhood claimed the lives of three local men, prompting an investigation by multiple agencies.

The Kankakee County Coroner, Bob Gessner, identified the victims as Kiyantis Riley, 45; Philip Birdsong, 48; and Jeffrey Clark II, 41. Gessner confirmed that all men were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the incident occurred.

Authorities reported that Riley was behind the wheel of a 2008 GMC Yukon, which left the roadway and struck a tree. Witnesses indicated the vehicle was traveling west at a high speed before the crash.

Emergency services received the call at approximately 1:07 a.m. and responded to the collision in the 900 block of South Cobb Boulevard. Upon arrival, Kankakee police and firefighters found the Yukon fully engulfed in flames. Despite their attempts to rescue the occupants, first responders were forced back due to the severity of the fire.

The incident has left the Kankakee community in shock, as all next-of-kin have been notified about the tragedy. Chief Chris Kidwell of the Kankakee Police stated that the investigation involves both the Kankakee Police Department and the Illinois State Police.

This crash marks a significant loss for the community, as the three men were well-known residents of Kankakee. Local leaders are urging caution on the roads, especially during late hours, while emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the collision.
