EDMONTON, Canada — A man has been charged with attempted murder following a vicious, unprovoked assault that left a 60-year-old man unconscious in central Edmonton last week. Police arrested 41-year-old Storm Saskatchewan after he allegedly attacked the older man as he walked to a gas station.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded on July 11 when Saskatchewan, who was sitting outside a gas station at the intersection of 92 Street and Jasper Avenue, suddenly attacked the victim without any apparent reason. The assault escalated as Saskatchewan reportedly choked the victim with a shopping bag.
The victim’s cries for help were heard by officers from the Edmonton Police Service’s Downtown Branch BEATS team, who were nearby and quickly intervened. Despite the suspect attempting to flee, a short foot pursuit ensued, and he was apprehended by the officers.
The 60-year-old victim was immediately rushed to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries but has since been released after receiving medical treatment. Saskatchewan was also taken to the hospital as a precaution before being charged.
The police later revealed that Saskatchewan, who has a history of violent crimes, is likely to have been under the influence of drugs during the assault. He is currently held in custody, facing charges of aggravated assault in addition to attempted murder.
Acting Inspector Michael Dreilich of the EPS Investigations Branch expressed relief that officers were close enough to act swiftly. “Thankfully, our officers were in immediate proximity to prevent further harm. Their rapid response not only potentially saved this man’s life but also quickly subdued the threat posed by a dangerous individual,” Dreilich said. He underscored the severity of the situation by adding that the circumstances could have been far worse without timely police intervention.
Dreilich further commented on the nature of the assault, condemning the unprovoked violence. “Incidents like this are alarming and have no place in our community. It’s a stark reminder of the critical role our officers play in maintaining public safety,” he stated.
The case has now been handed over to the local courts, where Saskatchewan will await trial. Meanwhile, the Edmonton community remains shaken by the brazenness of the daytime attack, raising concerns about public safety and the need for vigilant law enforcement in the city’s central areas.
