MASSAPEQUA, NY – A New York community is reeling after a trusted home health aide was accused of turning a place of care into the scene of a violent attack, leaving police and neighbors searching for answers in the wake of the disturbing incident.
Authorities say Amanda Fraser, 23, was assigned to care overnight for an elderly woman at a private residence in Massapequa on October 29. What should have been a routine shift quickly veered into something much more sinister in the early morning hours, according to prosecutors.
Surveillance cameras in the quiet suburb captured images prosecutors now describe as chilling. Around 2 a.m., Fraser is seen entering the bedroom of Wendy Wilson, then 84, as she slept. Officials allege Fraser approached with a large kitchen knife and attacked, stabbing Wilson in the torso.
For more than 15 minutes, disturbing details revealed by investigators suggest the violence didn’t end quickly. Prosecutors allege Fraser kept the blade embedded in Wilson’s body, encouraging the injured woman to succumb to her wounds as she lay moaning in pain. The incident, described by officials as “excruciating,” continued until Fraser finally withdrew the weapon and exited the home.
Outside, security cameras reportedly documented further chaos. Footage allegedly shows Fraser, in what appeared to be an attempt to flee, bringing her vehicle onto the home’s lawn before ultimately abandoning it and leaving the area on foot.
The following morning, relief arrived in the form of a different home health aide, who discovered Wilson badly injured in her bed. Emergency services quickly transported Wilson to a nearby hospital, where doctors treated serious injuries, including a punctured lung. During her lengthy recovery, Wilson celebrated her 85th birthday surrounded by her family.
Investigators soon tracked down Fraser in Queens later that same day. She was taken into custody and underwent a mental health evaluation before being formally charged. The home health care agency that employed her confirmed it is cooperating with authorities, but offered no further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
Prosecutors brought a range of serious charges against Fraser, including attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, and multiple counts relating to the endangerment of a vulnerable elderly person. She remains in custody at the Nassau County Correctional Center, with another court appearance set for December 9.
Meanwhile, the incident has left a once-quiet neighborhood shaken and raised new concerns for families relying on home care workers. As the legal proceedings move forward, questions linger about how someone entrusted to provide support could have allegedly committed such a shocking act inside a client’s home.
